What bikes worked best for you on ultra-distance events or what didn't?

I originally bought/created this bike to cross the USA with one other guy on an unsupported trip from San Diego to Ft Lauderdale.

My plans were this bike would become my BREVET cycle.

Recently I sent it to Blinkey Cycles to chop it and put S&S couples into it... The ride is still just as sweet and I can check it as regular luggage on an airplane.

Look closely and you can see the S&S couples on the top and down tubes.

The bike can and has been fitted with rear rack and fenders. And you can see it can be fitted with disk brakes (you can see the fork brake bosses... The rear has them too).

Also note the DUAL Cateye EL500 headlights, the Topeak MOONSHINE *HID* headlight, the GPS mount and the 5 tail lights. The Bento Box contains an external battery pack for the GPS that gives it a 4 day runtime.

And while I'm being a geek. Note that the bike is a DuraAce 9-speed but has a Ultegra 10-speed triple crank! This works VERY VERY nice indeed! The 10speed crank is very stiff and the bearings work far better than the Octalink stuff. It shifts VERY crisp.
